Some language software brands claim to be the leading English language solution to check English writing. A few do not only consist of spell, grammar, and punctuation checkers as they promise enhanced writing styles through special text enrichment feature that suggests better terms to use in constructing sentences. The software can even have a very comprehensive website that tackles and highlights all the important factors in considering an English writing tool for anyone’s computer. Most language software websites are also complete with a good demo. All these appealing elements, combined with delightful bonuses like templates, dictionary-thesaurus, text translator, and writing reviews make some brands sound like the perfect English writing software package in town.
Upon research, however, consumers find a lot of complaints about the different software brands when they want to check English writing. For instance, WhiteSmoke Inc. does not have a Better Business Bureau (BBB) Accreditation. Its BBB rating is very low, with a grade of C- on a scale of A+ to F. The factors affecting this low rating include fifty complaints filed in BBB against this software and the long time that WhiteSmoke takes to resolve customer complaints.
Some software brands flaunt their award-winning grammar checking services and claim that they can run as background software to check English writing in the computer, like WhiteSmoke Inc. Despite this statement, some reviews contradict this, contesting that it is mostly unstable and just a web application prone to error. When a large document is fed to the grammar checker, WhiteSmoke’s application fails in connecting to the server. When customer service is contacted, they advise clients to use the F2 application shortcut for checking any document. Unfortunately, this does not happen in reality. All text needed for grammar checking should be copied and pasted first from the word processing application like MS Word or Dreamweaver, to WhiteSmoke’s window for the checker to work. All the errors detected are shown, but the corrected text should be copy-pasted back to the word processor. Because of this, all formatting is lost and more time is consumed.
It is truly wise not to become overly excited with what a product’s website or company information claims to offer. Be sure to research well and examine all reviews and consumer insights first before making any purchase.
