Marketing SWAG for language and literacy programs

Swag is an important part of your promotional strategy. Otherwise known as “freebies”, “goodies” or “loot”, these are the items you give away to people in the hopes that they remember your program in a positive way.

The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines swag as:

1. (slang) ( a) The booty carried off by burglars, etc. (b) illicit gains

2. (a) an ornamental festoon of flowers, etc. (b) a carved etc. representation of this

3. (Australia & NZ) a traveller’s or miner’s bundle of personal belongings.

Marketing swag has elements of all these definitions. We hope that people will carry their swag with them in their briefcase or backpack (i.e. their “bundle of belongings”). Swag is now considered de rigueur as part of “table decor” at trade shows. It is a necessary accessory to the adornment of any promotional booth. People love it because it is free, so they make off with it like hot cakes, often sheepishly tucking it into their bags with a slight feeling of either guilt or glee, possibly both.

Recently though, I came across a definition of swag that I like even better. In a 2007 blog post, Suzette Bergeron, a marketing expert in Maine defines swag as “Stuff We All Get”. She goes on to explain different types of swag such as promotional giveaways, prizes and business gifts. For those of you who work in with international clients, you know how important those business gifts can be when working with certain countries.

So rather than the traditional definition, I’m going to go with Bergeron’s. It’s easy to remember and it conveys the idea of marketing swag perfectly.

Swag for language and literacy programs should relate to your program somehow. Remember to include your logo and program name, and if there’s space your website. The items need to reflect your purpose, your image and hopefully be useful to the recipients. Pens, pads of paper, book bags and even portfolios are all excellent swag ideas for language and literacy programs. Baseball caps, not so much. That is, unless you are offering an ESL program for baseball players. I’d also hesitate to go with items such as breath mints, eye glasses cleaning cloths and toys, all of which I have seen at educational trade fairs. When I see items like this, I scratch my head. I understand that they are novelty marketing items, but I question their longevity in the hands of the recipient once the novelty has worn off. Before you spend your money on swag ask yourself what is going to be most useful to those on the receiving end. You want them to hold on to it, make it part of the bundle of things they carry with them for a long time and most importantly, remember you by it.

Globalization has brought about so many changes in our world today by which economies, societies, and cultures have become integrated through a globe-spanning network of exchange. Driven by a combination of economic, technological, sociocultural, political, and biological factors, the term also refers to the transnational dissemination of ideas, languages, or popular culture. Russia is one of the many countries which embarked on major reforms for globalization, which led to the collapse of the Soviet Union in late 1991. Since gaining its independence, Russia was recognized as the legal successor to the Soviet Union on the international stage. However, there is one big barrier to be globally competitive, their language. Russia has its own native language. Although their language is considered as one of the six official languages of the United Nations, and is the most geographically widespread language of Eurasia and the largest native language in Europe, Russia has to learn the universal language, English. It may seem difficult but to be able to communicate with other people around the world Russia has to learn a second language. Russians have to learn to speak the English language to broaden their opportunities to transact with other countries which also have different native languages. Learning to speak English can improve their communication skills in their fight against terrorism, pursuit for globally competitive marketing strategies, improvement in technology education, and political relations with other powerful countries. There is no better way to maintain good relationship with one another than to be understood and that can only be achieved when both of you speak the same language.

Top reasons to study Chinese in China

Many people in the West who desire to learn Chinese take study lessons from some of the best language teaching classes online. However, the fact is, few students really achieve any level of proficiency in the Chinese language through online courses. In most cases, with the kind of language proficiency they have, these students may never get past the International airport if they were to land in China on their own!

The system of study in European countries is one that focuses on a single language. After all, it seems like all the world wants to learn English, while very few people want to learn languages like Chinese. But, given the sheer size and potential for growth in China, it is foolish to ignore the Chinese language. Besides, learning a new language is a cerebral challenge. It challenges established habits formed by the native language. It is even believed that learning a new language build new pathways in the brain delaying age related conditions like Parkinson Disease and Alzheimer’s.

Now that we have established the importance of studying the Chinese language, let us discuss why it is beneficial to study Chinese in China.

* China is where Chinese is spoken in all its native glory. This makes China the best place to learn Chinese.

* It is important to understand the basic nature of the Chinese language. The common perception that the Chinese language is a single language is somewhat skewed. Once you land in China, you will immediately see that there are a variety of dialects that lend richness and music to the Chinese language. Wouldn’t you rather learn Chinese from its native environment than in a plastic environment sitting in America or Spain?

* Many people make the mistake of learning a new language from inside out, that is, they try and learn to write and speak the language simultaneously. However, if you look back at how you learnt your native language, you will see that you learnt to speak the language first. Writing followed much later.

* When you learn a language like Chinese, you must concentrate on communication, instead of grammar. If you stay in China to study the Chinese language, you will have no choice but to communicate in Chinese, bad grammar and all – and that is the best way to learn a language.

* If you are dedicated to learning Chinese, you can easily find native speakers in a place like Beijing. You could pick up constant exposure to the language by talking to drivers and shopkeepers who are blissfully ignorant of your native tongue. When you are forced to communicate in a particular language, learning is much faster and more authentic. Besides, Beijing is exploding with new business activities and growing by leaps and bounds.

Tricks That Remove The Pain From Learning Spanish

Learning a second language has many benefits and is a tremendous idea. Spanish is rapidly approaching equal usage as English in the US. You’ll very often hear English messages repeated into Spanish. That’s one reason why it’s a good idea to learn Spanish. However, learning a second language is hard for many people. If you have trouble learning languages, here are a few tips to help you out:

Keeping some patience in mind will help. It’s doubtful you’ll be fluent in Spanish within 24 hours. Even if you had all the vocabulary and verbs remembered, your sentence structure may need a little work. You’ll get nowhere fast if you put a lot of pressure on yourself to speak fluently in too short a time. Instead let yourself learn slowly. You’ll be more comfortable and relaxed with the language. If people know you’re learning their language, when you talk to them they’ll be more patient with you. If you try to learn too fast and become over-confident, you run the risk of accidentally offending a person in a conversation if you make a mistake.

Register for a course. A lot of people are nervous to take a language course with others. It’s common to have to speak the language outloud in front of the whole class. This can intimidate a lot of students.

Even if stumbling through the new language out loud makes you uncomfortable, it’s still a good idea. Actually that’s the best time to learn because all the other people are learning and making mistakes. Everyone can all join in the mistake making! And you must admit it’s much better than learning in the real world where your mistakes could be an insulting comment!

Immerse your life in the new language. Are you in close proximity to a location where most of the people speak in Spanish? An excellent way to learn is by listening to a fluent conversation between two people. Very many people are pleased to help others learn how to speak their language. It’s convenient, close by, and you can receive really great practice speaking Spanish. If you need help in your study of Spanish, there are quite a few tools available that can be of use.

There’s no reason not to take advantage of the many sources of help that are out there today. Different styles work better for different people. Test many learning strategies until you find one that appeals to you. When you do find a system, teacher or course that you like, stick with it and Spanish will soon become second nature to you!

Global Online English Training – Investment for the Future

Global online English training began to gain popularity in 2007. For most people, international travel was too expensive and time consuming. Traditional classes were useful, but they were only scheduled at certain times and locations. Unless you lived or worked in a metropolitan area, it wasn’t possible to attend. Generic audio books provided flexibility to study at anytime, anywhere, but were not always available at the level needed, from a very basic beginner to the advanced conversationalist who wanted to polish their skills. Program structures vary from one vendor to another, but the goal is always quick, noticeable results.

One of the ways that global online English training courses customize to meet the student’s need is through testing. The initial “entrance exam” provides them with a baseline for each individual’s current abilities. It measures comprehension, vocabulary and proficiency in listening, reading and writing. Tests are scheduled at regular intervals throughout the training to ensure the student is ready to move to the next level. These programs have been designed for use at the individual’s own pace. A course may take a month to complete, or it may take 90 days, depending on the amount of time and effort available.

Not all global online English training courses are created equal. Some online courses are offered free of charge and focus on basic reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. It is up to the individual to study, research the options and to understand proper pronunciations. Audio files feature conversations that utilize vocabulary commonly found at the university level. Grammar, punctuation and guides to common idiom usage are resources that are offered with these types of courses. While this type of course is not for everyone, it can help prospective students decide if they are ready to make a financial commitment to learning English.

If you have decided to join a global online English training course and are willing to make the financial commitment to a quality program, congratulations! Online interactive programs utilize video streaming lessons, one-to-one interaction via WebEx or Skype with a professionally trained and certified instructor and access social networks that will connect you with other learners, worldwide. If you don’t have access to a reliable Internet connection or voice over IP service, don’t worry. Telephone and email options are also available. Do You Need Help Learning Spanish?

Learning Spanish can be accomplished by anyone, no matter what their prior experience with languages. Speaking a language for the first time may seem difficult, but anyone who makes a serious effort can learn how. Having the ability to converse in another language is a valuable skill to have nowadays. Knowing more than one language can really help if you do any traveling. It’s also very likely that people right in your own city or nearby speak Spanish, making it useful at home too. If you only speak one language and want to learn another, Spanish is a very good choice. Here are a few hints that should make the learning process easier.

Developing a Spanish accent or tongue is a good place to start your study. The proof of how well you know a language is in how you sound speaking it, not how well you know the rules of grammar. If you want to quickly get into the habit of speaking Spanish, get anything you can find written in Spanish and read it out loud. Whenever you hear people speaking Spanish fluently, record the words in your mind and repeat what you can recall later. When you do this, you will start to understand the right way to use inflections and put words together into correct sentences. It’s likely that you will have fun when you practice speaking out loud in a new language. It can feel like singing!

An important skill to acquire is to practice thinking in the new language. Whenever you catch yourself thinking about anything, make the effort to translate whatever it is into Spanish. You will have to practice this, so don’t be in a hurry. Periodically throughout your day ask yourself how you would say the words you are thinking in Spanish. This is an ability you will improve at the more you practice it. You will get faster at the translation. At some point, you will become so accustomed to this that you won’t even have to make an effort; you’ll just find yourself thinking in Spanish. The next stage is to take your internal thoughts and speak them out loud, so you learn how to converse in Spanish.

And remember that practice makes perfect. Even if you feel silly you should practice speaking your language as often as possible. It will help you a lot if you substitute your native language with the words you do know in your new language. If you’re learning Spanish, try using “uno” for “one” and “cena” in place of “dinner,” By using the words often they’ll become second nature to you. This will help you to know the words when you hear them being used. This technique will really help you understand your new language when you talk to others who are fluent in it.

There are many good reasons to learn a second language, but discovering the best way can be difficult.

Perhaps you’re thinking about getting a book from some bookstore. You can get to know people who speak the language, or you can take a class. There are so many alternatives for learning Spanish. Make sure you enjoy it!
