Have you always wanted to learn a new language but fear that it would be too difficult? The truth is that learning a new language is often little more than memorization, especially in the beginning. You simply start to learn more words and phrases, then some grammar, and you suddenly realize it isn’t so hard after all. Many people find that they learn their new language before they consciously realize that they’ve learned something new. The trick for people who want to learn French (or any other language) is to find a way of learning that suits them.
The best way to learn any new language is to be open to that language. Some people will claim they are trying to learn French but then hold on to the way their native language works. So many people have a hard time because they try to make the new language fit into the rules of their old language. No two languages are the same. So each language has its own particular type of structure and rules of grammar. People who are not familiar with other languages often expect every language to work the same way.
When you start to learn French, you have to be open to the ways that it’s going to differ from your own language, and this goes beyond just the vocabulary.
The more you feel uncomfortable, the more you’ll be able to relax. When you start taking classes to learn a new language it is a good idea to remind yourself that everybody else there is in the same position that you are in. If you make pronunciation mistakes, or verb tense errors, no will laugh at you.
Hey, all the others are beginners! One of the greatest impediments to learning is fear of failure, self-consciousness, and fear of how you may look in front of the others. When you take a beginners class in French, everybody else there is new to the language as well. Just relax and make your mistakes as they happen. You’ll have an easier time of learning and so will everybody else!
Try to think in French. The way this works is that you take whatever thought you have and translate it into French. As you practice this, thinking in French will become something you do naturally. Being able to think in French is one of the best ways to make sure you communicate effectively in that language. What this does is get you speaking the new language internally, which makes it much more natural when you speak out loud.
You’ll find there are a lot of ways to learn French.
Avoid getting discouraged, if possible. Learning a new language can be one of the most difficult things to do. So just be patience and put the effort into it, and before long you’ll be speaking fluent French!
